One of professional hockey’s most promising draft picks, Gavin McKenna, was recently charged with aggravated assault. The 18-year-old is predicted to be a first overall pick for this June’s NHL draft.

A forward at Penn State, Gavin was arrested on Wednesday, February 4. The alleged victim had surgery after the incident.

A State College Police Department press release revealed Gavin’s charge of four total counts, including felony aggravated assault. Other charges include misdemeanor simple assault, summary harassment and summary disorderly conduct. All counts stem from a January 31 incident between Gavin and another man.

The press release says it happened in the 100 block of South Pugh Street in State College around 8:45 p.m. local time. According to police, “It is alleged that McKenna struck a 21-year-old male in the face during the altercation resulting in facial injuries requiring corrective surgery.”

Penn State’s student newspaper, The Daily Collegian, reported that the 21-year-old alleged victim lost a tooth and had his jaw wired shut after an altercation with the hockey phenom.

If convicted, Gavin faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine.

After his arraignment, Gavin was released on $20,000 bail, according to the statement. The Canadian native’s court date is February 11, 8:30 a.m., at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.

A Penn State spokesperson said, “We are aware that charges have been filed; however, as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not have any further comment,” according to ESPN and Sports Illustrated.

Gavin played with Penn State’s Nittany Lions at PSU’s Beaver Stadium in a game against Michigan State on the day of the incident. Although he scored a goal and two assists, the Lions lost 5-4 in overtime.

Following NBC’s announcement that Savannah Guthrie is dropping out of covering the NBC 2026 Olympics, her replacement has been announced. Mary Carillo will replace the TODAY show cohost as prime-time anchor for the Milan Cortina Winter Games, according to NBC Sports PR.

Savannah’s replacement was named after her mother Nancy’s sudden disappearance from her home. She has been missing since Sunday, February 1, when she didn’t show up to church.

Mary is a veteran broadcaster who has covered 16 Olympic Games for NBC Sports. She will be joined by Terry Gannon, a sportscaster and broadcaster for NBC Sports, Golf Channel and Peacock. Both will host the Milan Cortina 2026 Opening Ceremony on Friday, February 6. Sportscaster and NBC Sports studio host Ahmed Fareed will host Olympic Late Night for the first three nights of the Olympics.

According to NBC Sports executive producer, Molly Solomon, the network is “fortunate to have a deep bench of talented commentators” and added that Mary is “a master storyteller.”

A native of New York, Mary is of Italian descent and lived in Milan for two years when she was young. Her broadcasting journey began in 1980 after her four-year professional tennis career concluded due to knee injuries. Since, 1996, Mary has served as an analyst for NBC’s French Open coverage. She is well-known for providing tennis commentary for USA Network, ESPN, CBS, HBO and Turner Sports. She also has covered 13 Olympics with NBCUniversal. This includes hosting three Closing Ceremonies and prominently covering the 2004 Athens, 2006 Torino and 2010 Vancouver Opening Olympic Ceremonies.

Mary has proven herself an award-winning sports broadcast veteran. She won a Sports Emmy for her contributions to HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. She has also won two Peabody Awards.

Savannah’s colleagues have voiced their support for her and her family. In a statement, Molly said, “Our hearts go out to Savannah and the entire Guthrie family. They continue to have our full support.” Both the FBI and Arizona’s Pima County Sheriff’s Department are investigating Nancy’s apparent kidnapping.

The father of Kansas City Chief’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, was arrested on a parole violation Tuesday, February 3. Jail records confirm Patrick Mahomes, Sr. arrived in Tyler, Tex., and was booked into the Smith County Jail at 11:24 a.m. CT.

Two years ago, the NFL star’s father was arrested after driving intoxicated. His blood alcohol level measured 0.23, over the legal limit of .08.

According to KLTV, Smith County District Attorney Jacob Putman said Patrick Senior was locked up following a New Year’s Day high alcohol reading on his ankle monitor.

Subsequent urine analyses on both January 5 and January 9 were negative, according to reports obtained by TMZ.

The former baseball player is challenging these new allegations, CBS 19 revealed. A motion has been filed to end the violation.

After Patrick Senior’s arrest for intoxicated driving in September 2024, his fourth for the same offense, he received five years of probation. If the terms were violated, he risked up to 10 years of jail time.

Patrick Senior was first arrested in 2018. At that time, the judge sentenced him to 40 days in the county jail. His time was served on weekends between February 2019 and February 2020, according to the Kansas City Star.

Days following his dad’s 2024 arrest, Patrick II spoke to journalists prior to his Super Bowl appearance. “He’s doing good. I don’t really want to get into it too much but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is,” he said. “It’s a family matter so I will just keep it to the family. That’s all I really have to say at this point.”

His father said the arrest was “the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever been through in my life. I called [my son] right after, and I told him, I said, ‘I’m sorry that it’s taking away from your time and taking away from your focus.’”

Patrick Jr. has not commented on his father’s most recent arrest.

Time is of the essence in finding Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy, missing since at least last Sunday. The 84-year-old with no cognitive issues, disappeared from her home, and foul play is suspected.

Nancy’s family last saw her on Saturday, January 31, after taking her home at about 9:30 p.m. Friends called family members when Nancy didn’t show up at church on Sunday. After searching her home, they called the police.

$2,500 is being offered for information on Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department put up a $2,500 reward for information on Nancy’s disappearance. There are no solid leads, and police are asking those living nearby for “any video or photograph information.” They are describing Nancy’s home as a “crime scene.” She also needs crucial daily medication.

Savannah, who remains in Arizona with her family, asked for prayers in an Instagram message on Monday. Co-anchor, Craig Melvin, said those with any information should immediately alert law enforcement. “Again, we know someone out there knows something. Call,” he said.

On Tuesday, co-host Carson Daly said, “I hit my knees and prayed and I don’t think I’ve ever prayed for anything harder in my life.”

A selfie shot had the couple posing beside financial influencer Haley Sacks at Grammys after parties.

She wrote on a post, tagging Emilio, “It’s 75 degrees and Bad Bunny is there? I’m in. Thank you, @grammys, for an incredible evening.” He also posted photos with Kaitlan on his Instagram Story from the weekend festivities. This included a photo of himself in the audience with Ben Levine, CAA agent and CNN’s Chief White House correspondent. Another photo, taken at 1:22 a.m. following the after parties, showed the two partying with friends in a hotel room surrounded by food from room service.

However, social media comments on the photos focused on Kaitlan’s appearance and not her date.

It has been years since Kaitlan has publicly revealed a romantic relationship. She dated Texas businessman and pharmacist Will Douglas in 2015, but their relationship ended in 2017. He ended up running for the Texas House of Representatives as a Republican in 2019. Democratic incumbent Rhetta Andrews Bower won that 2020 election to the state House.

Kaitlan has been very quiet about her private life, which is why her red carpet appearance with Emilio caused a commotion and attracted much attention.

The singer, whose real name is Jason DeFord, would not comment on the current climate in the U.S. He was honored with three awards at the ceremony, including Best Contemporary Country Album for Beautifully Broken.

While singers Bad Bunny and Billie Eilish gave harsh comments about ICE, Jelly Roll refused to comment on the state of the country. When asked if he would like to respond by reporters in the backstage press room, he responded, “not really.” Then added, “So, this is the truth, and I’m glad somebody asked because I love talking about this stuff, and people care to hear my opinion, but, so, I can tell you that people shouldn’t care to hear my opinion.”

Describing himself as “a dumb redneck,” the “Son of a Sinner” singer admitted he hasn’t “watched enough. I didn’t have a phone for 18 months. I’m so disconnected from what’s happening.”

Although he didn’t comment to reporters at the Grammys, Jelly Roll said he’d be giving his opinion soon. “I’m going through it the next week, and everybody’s going to hear exactly what I have to say about it in the most loud and clear way I’ve ever spoke in my life,” he said. “So, I look forward to it.”

Along with winning Best Contemporary Country Album, Jelly Roll won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Amen” with Shaboozey, along with  Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song with on Brandon Lake for “Hard Fought Hallelujah.”

Today show host Savannah Guthrie missed the Monday, February 2 broadcast. Co-hosts soon revealed Savannah’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy, was missing from her Arizona home since at least Saturday.

The news was the top story on the Today show, as the co-hosts provided insight on the situation. They also provided a number for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department so viewers could report any sightings or information.

On Monday’s show, Craig Melvin opened the segment saying, “We want to get right to what is a deeply personal story for us, Nancy Guthrie, Savannah’s beloved mother, has been reported missing in Arizona.”

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900,” Savannah said in a statement. 

In a Sunday night press conference, Chris Nanos of the Pima County Sheriff verified that Nancy has “no cognitive issues at all. She’s very alert, she’s of good, sound mind.” He added that Savannah’s mother was “not in good physical health.” NBC revealed that the condition of Nancy’s house was “very concerning” and of “grave concern,” according to the sheriff. 

As part of the search for Nancy, Arizona authorities have activated several methods. Airplanes, drones, helicopters and search-and-rescue dogs borrowed from Border Patrol have been activated. Foul play remains a possibility, as the investigation involves homicide detectives, although no body has been found. “I hope we find her safe and sound, but we can’t ignore what’s in front of us,” the sheriff said, alluding to the possibility of foul play.

Nancy appeared on the Today show many times with her daughter. Most recently, she participated in a segment on their hometown, Tucson, Ariz., this past November.

Singer Cardi B won in court and also got in the last word. The plaintiff’s lawyer in her trial was reprimanded by the judge.

A security guard accused her of assault in 2018 and filed a $24 million lawsuit. Cardi B was cleared by a Los Angeles jury back in September.

According to the judge’s ruling, a forbidden question crossed the line, triggering reprimand, public admonition and added attention to the trial’s procedures. The plaintiff’s attorney, Ron A. Rosen Janfaza, was sanctioned

According to Rolling Stone, Judge Ian C. Fusselman’s six-page decision detailed why the security guard’s attorney was fined $1,500. This resulted from a question Cardi B was asked while on the witness stand last August after obvious instructions prohibiting it.

Prior to the trial, the judge strictly limited information disclosed in front of jurors. This includes discussing alleged prior behavior, such as exotic dancing or associating with gang members. In July of last year at the pretrial hearing, the judge said this information “would be unduly prejudicial and likely to confuse the jury and result in an undue waste of time.”

Ignoring the instructions, Ron asked Cardi B, “Do you have any affiliation at this time with a gang?” while she was on the stand. The defense lawyers objected and a court warning was issued. Still, the question resulted in sanctions and changed the conversation following the verdict.

Cardi B’s lawyers asked the court to hold Ron in contempt. He first made excuses, but the judge rejected them all. “The court is not persuaded by any of these arguments,” Judge Fusselman stated. He reiterated that the instructions were clear. “Mr. Janfaza was aware of the [prior] ruling and that the question was specifically drafted in an attempt to avoid directly violating the letter, but not the clear intent, of the court’s ruling. It was no accident. It was a knowing and intentional violation of the court’s ruling.”

Luigi Mangione will soon be on trial for the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. There has been speculation on whether he would face the death penalty for his crime.

He was indicted on 11 counts, including first-degree murder and murder as a crime of terrorism. Luigi allegedly shot Brian in Midtown Manhattan on December 4.

Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty

U.S. District Court Judge Margaret M. Garnett‘s ruled on Friday, January 30, that Luigi will not face the death penalty, according to CNN. This is a big loss for the U.S. Department of Justice, which asked federal prosecutors for the death penalty.

In April 2025, Attorney General Pam Bondi said, “Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America. After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump‘s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”

Karen Friedman Agnifilo, part of Luigi’s defense team, described Pam’s statement as “explicitly and unapologetically political” claiming it violated his constitutional rights.

In September, Luigi’s defense team filed a motion for the judge to dismiss the death penalty. She included what she described as Pam’s “extrajudicial statements.” The defense voiced concern that “the government allowed the grand jury to be prejudiced.”

Along with using a firearm for murder, Luigi faces federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death, stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death and discharging a firearm that was equipped with a silencer in furtherance of a crime of violence.

He also faces 11 charges in another New York state case, but the two most serious counts were dropped due to insufficient evidence. This included first-degree murder in furtherance of an act of terrorism and second-degree murder as a crime of terrorism. In both cases, Luigi pleaded not guilty.

He is being held in the Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. Today’s hearing may determine the federal case start date. Jury selection begins September 8.

Actor John Leguizamo recently opened up about his thoughts on ICE supporters. The John Wick actor has not held back on his opinions of the government’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and its devotees.

He is not alone, as a number of other celebrities have criticized those who agree with ICE’s immigration tactics. John was a vocal backer of Kamala Harris in the last presidential election.

John Leguizamo is firm in his stance on ICE

In an online public statement, John said, “If you follow ICE, unfollow me.” He opposes ICE’s actions in the U.S. and wants nothing to do with its supporters. He went as far as to state that ICE supporters should not watch his movies or attend any shows he’s a part of. The statement was recorded in a red lit room and posted as an Instagram reel. The caption, which simply said, “Abolish ice!”, received more than 600,000 likes and 10,000+ comments in one day. It also prompted thousands of shares.

The majority of fans saluted John for his comments, reiterating his views. Others commented on crimes by undocumented immigrants in the U.S. to insist ICE is necessary. Some pointed out that the actor didn’t speak out during President Barak Obama’s term when he attacked immigrants.

In 2025, former actor Dean Cain announced he was joining ICE, and many in the industry criticized the move, including John. At that time, he reposted a meme with a photo of Dean and the “Pronouns: Has/Been” on his face. John also posted a photo of Dean on his Instagram with a caption, “How big of a loser do you have to be to volunteer to be an ICE OFFICER???”

According to The Blast, actor Kevin McHale also criticized Dean as a “f*cking pathetic loser.” Comedian Margaret Cho, agreed, saying in an Instagram reel, “Why would you join ICE and encourage people to join ICE when your ancestors were interned in World War II? You’re Japanese, you’re not even white … I know you, and you are not white.”
