Season 10 of The Real Housewives of Potomac just came to a close in an unprecedented fashion. Last week, the main cast spent their final moments of the season driving around in circles, with things ultimately concluding in a gas station parking lot somewhere in the middle of Colorado.
In Season 10 Episode 17, “Karen Comes Home,” the artist formerly known as the Grande Dame took the reins to bring the season to a real close. Karen made her big return to Bravo after spending nearly six months in prison, and she had a lot to get off her chest.
What happened in The Real Housewives of Potomac Season 10 Episode 17?
We’re done talking about fly fishing, Wanderland, and messed-up Airbnb accommodations. This week was all about Karen as she stepped out of jail and into her new life as a sober woman. In addition to a heartwarming homecoming with her family, Karen got a house visit from Andy Cohen, and the two had an intimate conversation about her DUI, the experience in jail, and the behaviors that brought her to this moment.
The Hugers were reunited
This week’s episode kicked off with Karen leaving prison and jumping into an SUV rigged with Bravo cameras. It’s the footage we’ve all been waiting to see, ever since we learned that an RHOP production crew was staged outside of the jail, eagerly awaiting her release.
Karen arrived home, where more cameras were waiting, and was immediately greeted by her Ray, Rayvin, and her sister, Bridget. The first thing on her mind was thanking them for their support and telling them all about her jailhouse braids. The second thing on her mind? A shower. She said she needed to wash the jail off of her.
One week after reuniting with her family, Andy showed up in Potomac to have a candid conversation with the recently freed Karen. They wasted no time getting into the details about Karen’s life in jail and what she learned about herself while behind bars.
Karen opened up about alcoholism and prescription pill abuse

Before Karen went to jail, she skipped the RHOP Season 9 reunion and admitted herself into a rehabilitation program. During her sitdown with Andy, she admitted that her trip to rehab wasn’t just about her relationship with alcohol. She also abused prescription pills.
Karen said that Ray first raised concerns with her about her substance abuse about twenty years ago. That’s when she got her first DUI, and Ray told her that it seemed like she might have a drinking problem. However, Karen didn’t believe him, and she said a doctor told her she was “fine.”
Instead of addressing her increasing reliance on alcohol, she got an antidepressant prescription. Then, when her parents passed away, Karen said she doubled the dose. That’s when things took a turn, and Karen admitted that she’s fighting two battles, both pills and alcohol.
For that reason, Karen doesn’t necessarily label herself as an “alcoholic.” Instead, she considers herself “a person living in lifetime recovery.” She knows that both addictions played a part in what got her to this place in her life, and she has now allegedly committed to living a sober lifestyle moving forward.
Karen addressed the viral body cam footage of her arrest
“Let’s talk about the film that broke the internet,” Karen said, before diving into that viral body cam footage of her arrest.
According to Karen, she never wanted to watch the body cam footage, and she refused to let Ray see it either. She “isolated” him from the entire legal process, hoping to confront things on her own.
Meanwhile, Karen’s lawyers watched the footage and warned her that it would be extremely damaging. They told her to take a plea deal. However, she said her judgment was still cloudy because of her reliance on alcohol and pills. She wasn’t living “in reality” and continued pushing the case, which ultimately resulted in jail time and the video going public. It’s a fate that Karen now realizes was completely avoidable.
It wasn’t until she entered rehab and her therapist forced her to confront the reality of the video, all the way down to the “Thomas Jefferson’s concubine” comment. That’s when Karen finally realized just how bad things were for her. She broke down.
“The shame,” Karen recalled. “I just couldn’t believe it was me.”
Did Karen feel surprised by her prison sentence?

The Bravoverse was flipped upside down when the news dropped that Karen had been sentenced to two years in jail, with one year suspended. But did Karen feel that way? Kind of!
Karen told Andy that she mentally prepared herself for jail time. However, she thought the worst-case scenario would be a three-month sentence. She definitely didn’t anticipate getting slapped with a full year behind bars.
Of course, Karen only served about half of that time, and she said that was because she immediately “got to work” when she went behind bars. She led both Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous classes, which helped knock some time off her sentence.
The new Karen is ready for her second chance

The biggest takeaway from this sitdown with Andy is that the Grande Dame we’ve known for the last decade has retired. Through both her therapy and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, Karen has apparently learned a lot about herself and the emotional damage she’s carried into adulthood. A new version of Karen has seemingly emerged. She said she’s evolved so much throughout this experience that even Ray has to learn to love this new woman.
Of course, there’s still a Real Housewife in there, too. For example, Karen managed to land a few digs at Wendy and successfully teed up a showdown between the two that we’ll see at the Season 10 reunion. Still, Karen seems to be operating on a new level of emotional depth and self-awareness after putting in all of these hours into therapy, Narcotics Anonymous, and the Montgomery County Detention Center.
Although many Bravo fans feel like she doesn’t deserve a second chance after this experience, Karen is ready to embrace the new chapter with a sense of gratitude. She said that RHOP “saved” her, and she believes she probably would have “spiraled quicker” without it. Now, she’s ready to move forward with a clear and sober mind, hopefully.
The Real Housewives of Potomac airs on Sundays at 8/7c. You can stream it the following day on Peacock.
